Stone Condition:
the stone is broken with the lower part missing; surface damage obliterates some of the surviving epitaph but overall the fragment is in good condition
Conservation:
The stone was unearthed during sewer upgrade works on vul. Zelena near house 45 in early November 2012; Mykhailo Vorobets showed the stone to RJH on 07 November 2012 and arranged to have the stone moved to the new Jewish cemetery in the following days. A week later, Israel Meir Gabai of Agudas Ohalei Tzadikim met with Mr. Vorobets and arranged to move the stone to the closed ohel in the old cemetery. Later, Mr. Gabai's team erected the stone over one of the graves in the ohel, where it remains.

Other Notes:
The crown in the top symbol area is flanked by a pair of lions.
Where names or other data are derived from records and not from the headstone itself, a double dagger (‡) symbol is appended to indicate the separate origin of the information.
The high praise in the epitaph and the date of death enable identification of the deceased even though no names remain on the stone; those names typically would appear near the end of the epitaph, but the lower part of this stone is lost. The Yizkor Book for Rohatyn includes a chapter written by Yehoshua Spiegel (who also edited the original Yizkor Book) called "The Hasidut of Stratyn", which names and describes some of the influential rabbis of Rohatyn, Stratyn, and the nearby Jewish communities. Toward the end of that chapter, Spiegel writes about Rabbi Uri Langner of Rohatyn, who moved to Stratyn to lead the community there after the death of his father-in-law Rabbi Avramtche (Avraham), "was an outstanding scholar and personality and rose to the heavens on Lag B'Omer 5649 (1889)". The exact date match and the prominence of Rabbi Uri's reputation make it certain that this stone was carved for his grave site. See the Yizkor Book chapter in the original Hebrew, in an English translation online, and on pages 98~107 of Donia Gold Shwartzstein's book "Remembering Rohatyn and its Environs".
