Other Notes:
[N] Her name Esther Gittel אסתר גיטל appears as an acrostic, 4+4 lines – 2-5, 6-9. These letters are enlarged. As is often the case, the acrostic is accompanied by a rhyming feature. The 5 lines 2-6 all end with the absent but understood letter ה, to avoid the explicit inscriptionיה , a divine name, each bearing an -eyah sound. The remaining 3 lines 7-9 do not require abbreviating and end with the similar sounds -tah, -kah and -tah again.
[N4] במעשיה is slightly abbreviated to 'במעשי to avoid inscribing the divine name יה.
[N5] Literally 'soft in years'.
[N7] The literal 'God-fearing' is a translation that is widely-accepted, meaning 'devout'. Since the root ירא is repeated on the same line, it is translated as 'devotion' this second time. 'God' is inscribed 'ד rather than 'ה, the standard abbreviation for Hashem השם [The Name]. Appearing only in writing, 'ד represents an even-higher level of 'distancing' than that provided by 'ה, but is nevertheless voiced 'Hashem'.
[N11] The month of Av is often termed Menachem-Av. Menachem [also used as a given name] means 'for consolation'. The Jerusalem Temple was destroyed on the 9th of Av; Menachem is symbolically added as a prefix – in the future, may this sad month no longer be associated with death but become one of consolation.
[N11] The year inscription ת'ש, with no further digits visible, always raises doubt. There is no space available to its left so ת'ש it is, the centennial year 5700.
[N13] If פאנלער then Fanler [or similar]. But it could be פאגלער Fagler [or similar]. Either way, this is a rare surname that is difficult to corroborate.
