Other Notes:
[N2] The literal 'God-fearing' is a translation that is widely-accepted, meaning 'devout'. 'God' is inscribed 'ד rather than 'ה, the standard abbreviation for Hashem השם [The Name]. Appearing only in writing, 'ד represents an even-higher level of 'distancing' than that provided by 'ה, but is nevertheless voiced 'Hashem'.
[N3] Translated as 'proudly', גבוה can also mean 'vainly' – but a negative rendering such as this would not appear on a gravestone.
[N4] Literally, as one would do with a flower, 'he was plucked in half his days'.
[N7] Only the top of the letters of חשון are somewhat visible; Cheshvan is inferred from the context and the preceding מר. The descriptor Mar 'bitter' for the month of Cheshvan is widely encountered. Usually transcribed combined as Marcheshvan, it also often rendered in Hebrew as a single word מרחשון. The usual explanation given for the Mar prefix is that Cheshvan is the only Jewish month that is devoid of notable days, festive or otherwise.
