[N2] In biblical lore, the city gates were a place where townsfolk would meet to talk about community matters and settle legal disputes. A man 'praised at the gates' was known to be of good reputation and civic standing.
[N3-4] This phrase is based on לַחְמוֹ נִתָּן מֵימָיו נֶאֱמָנִים [Isaiah 33:16] whose full biblical context refers to the reward awaiting a righteous individual – '[such a person shall dwell in lofty security with inaccessible cliffs for a stronghold] with food supplied and drink assured'. Here the context of this similar phrase is the deceased's devotion to charity.
[N4] The spelling ללין probably reflects the Hasidic pronunciation of ללון, the usual spelling of this word.
[N4&6] היה is slightly abbreviated to 'הי to avoid inscribing the divine name יה.
