Other Notes:
[N] The deceased was a grandson of the famous Rabbi Yehoshua of Dynów [who died in 1814]. A short biography of this Rabbi [Meir Wunder, 1992] claims that "his grandson, the venerable old man, the esteemed R. Eliezer Lesser of Dobromyl, spoke much of his grandfather and apparently met his death in the Holocaust". He was 'elderly' when he died as the gravestone records on line 6. Even if he was extremely so – this Eliezer of Dobromyl, who died in 5699/1938, could not have known Rabbi Yehoshua personally and he did not perish in the Holocaust. If the biography indeed refers to this grandson Eliezer [and his 'speaking of his grandfather' was actually via hearsay], he would have borne the surname Lesser.
[N] The name of the deceased Eliezer אליעזר which first appears on line 8, is preceded by an acrostic generated by the first, enlarged letter of each of the lines 2-7. As is often the case, the acrostic is accompanied by a rhyming feature. Thus ve'anashim, ha'midrashim, ha'kedoshim and mikdoshim [lines 2,3,6&7] rhyme; as do ha'meushar and ube'yosher [lines 4&5].
[N2] The translation is shortened – it reads literally 'a man reputable amongst mankind and men'. Perhaps the superfluous last word ואנשים was added to make the line rhyme with lines 3,6&7.
[N3] The word למד , were it vowelized, would be לִמֵּד rather than לָמַד ['limed' rather than lamad'] – i.e. imparted rather than received knowledge.
[N3] The Midrash is a vast corpus of rabbinic biblical text exegesis, stories and homilies [plural midrashim] particularly suited to study by laymen.
[N4] Yichus, Jewish 'pedigree', has been translated as 'ancestry'.
[N8] The abbreviation מו'הרר is an extended honorific which, to lend extra weight, is translated as 'acclaimed Rabbi'.
[N10] The phrase 'departed to his world' is a common euphemistic expression for 'died'.
[N11] The 3-letter abbreviation לפ'ק stands for לפרט קטן 'by the small count'. It often appears as a ligature, whereby these letters coalesce to form a single symbol. It confirms that the numeral 5 for 5000 is absent, it being obvious; a gravestone would have to predate the civil year 1239/40 for it to belong to the previous Jewish millennium.
