Other Notes:
[N3] 'God' is inscribed 'ד rather than 'ה, the standard abbreviation for Hashem השם [The Name]. Appearing only in writing, 'ד represents an even-higher level of 'distancing' than that provided by 'ה, but is nevertheless voiced 'Hashem'.
[N4] The shamash שמש is a 'beadle', responsible for looking after the technical side of a synagogue's operation. The word שמש may also be interpreted as a verb – 'he served in the Great Synagogue'. Therefore, the term is transliterated but not translated.
[N6] Koppil קאפיל. Without the yod, the more common surname Koppel קאפל.
[N7] The descriptor Mar 'bitter' for the month of Cheshvan is widely encountered. Usually transcribed combined as Marcheshvan, it also often rendered in Hebrew as a single word מרחשון. The usual explanation given for the Mar prefix is that Cheshvan is the only Jewish month that is devoid of notable days, festive or otherwise.
