[N] The four letters of Meir מאיר appear as an acrostic; not all at the beginning of lines as is customary, but embedded in the text in a slightly-larger, but nevertheless discernable, font size – on lines 2,3,5&6. In the older of the two images they are all [except the yod of יקר on line 5] picked out clearly in gold, as is the full name on line 7. The פ נ and at least part of the Levite symbol also show signs of gold coloring.
[N2-3] מאיר here has a dual meaning. This was the deceased's name and the letter מ provides the first letter of the acrostic. Literally however, it also serves to form the phrase מאיר עיני '(he who) lights up my eyes' or, in the context of this and the next line 'Meir, enlighten me – they ask with counsel and sound wisdom'. The translation reflects this double interpretation. The phrase עֵצָה וְתוּשִׁיָּה [Proverbs 8:14] is here modified to בעצה ותושי, without the ה, to avoid the divine name יה. There is no apostrophe 'ותושי present, to indicate that the word has been truncated – perhaps it was omitted, cleverly, since the next letter on the line א generates the intended phonetic –yah, without actually inscribing it as יה.
[N9] The month of Av is often termed Menachem-Av. Menachem [also used as a given name] means 'for consolation'. The Jerusalem Temple was destroyed on the 9th of Av; Menachem is symbolically added as a prefix – in the future, may this sad month no longer be associated with death but become one of consolation.
