Other Notes:
[N3] The abbreviation here is [מז]רע, literally 'of the seed of' – hence translated 'maiden name' Leiner, Weinberger having been her married name.
[N4] The phrase מנשים באהל תברך – 'of women (who dwell) in tents most blessed' [Judges 5:24], is often encountered on female gravestones. These words of praise are totally removed from their biblical context, which refers to the heroine Yael bravely killing the enemy general Sisera by driving a tent peg through his temple as he sleeps.
[N5-7] Proverbs 31:20-31 is an ode to A Woman of Valor, אשת חיל. It is sung traditionally at the Friday night dinner table just before Kiddush by the husband, gathered family and guests, in honor of the lady of the house. As such, phrases from it are often quoted on female gravestones – here from verses 10, 30 and 31.
[N7] In biblical lore, the city gates were a place where townsfolk would meet to talk about community matters and settle legal disputes. Someone 'praised at the gates' was known to be of good reputation and civic standing.
[N9] The phrase 'she departed to her world' is a commonly-encountered, euphemistic expression for 'she died'.
