[N] This is a classic example of a gravestone divided into two sections. Unfortunately, the genealogical one is missing; only the laudatory section remains. This exhibits an acrostic for צבי Tzvi, based on the first somewhat-enlarged letter of each of the lines 2-4. Tzvi would appear to be the second of two original given names – the exclamatory הו of line 1 is also enlarged and may have served as the final pair of letters of a name that ends in this fashion [Eliya-hu, Yirmiya-hu, Yishaya-hu, etc.]. Thus, although הו! for Alas! is pronounced as Ho!, in the context of the line, serving in a possible acrostic it would represent this -hu. As is often the case, the acrostic is accompanied by a rhyming feature – an -eynu sound at the end of all four lines except the final ת נ צ ב ה.
[N2] Tzur – transliterated from צור, meaning Rock – acts in this context as a divine name.
[N3] 'On behalf of his soul' – that of the deceased – 'shall our prayers come before Him' [before Tzur, God].
[N4] יניח may reflect local pronunciation for ינוח.
[N4] בשלום 'in peace' is abbreviated by just one letter ם final-mem – presumably to provide more space on this 'cramped' line.
[N4] Paraphrasing the biblical verse [Daniel 12:13] – ואתה לך לקץ ותנוח ותעמד לגרלך לקץ הימין – 'As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.' This verse describes the resting phase of the afterlife, to be followed by resurrection in Messianic times. It is a centerpiece of Jewish burial service liturgy.
[N4] משוחנו – 'our one who is anointed', usually appears more simply as משיחנו 'our anointed one'/ 'our Mashiach' [our Messiah].
