Other Notes:
[N5-6] 5698 was a Jewish leap year. As such, it had two Adar months – an extra intercalated First Adar [Adar I] and the usual Adar, renamed Second Adar [Adar II]. His death occurred on the first day of Rosh Chodesh [New Month, celebrating the 'new moon'] First Adar. When a month has two days of Rosh Chodesh, the first is celebrated on the last day of the previous month. Thus the equivalent date was 29th Sh'vat, not 1st Adar I.
[N6] The year 5698 appears as 600+8+90 (תרח'ץ) rather than the usual hundreds/tens/units format 600+90+8 (תרצ'ח) because the latter spells the Hebrew word for 'murder' or 'kill'. תרצ'ח was therefore often avoided on gravestones that year, throughout the Jewish world, for fear of 'the evil eye' (עין הרע).
